The Google DeepMind leadership shakeup puts Demis Hassabis, the lab’s co-founder and chief executive, into strategic roles while handing its daily management to Koray Kavukcuoglu. Alphabet announced on August 5 that Hassabis will become chair of Google DeepMind and the company’s new chief scientist, Reuters reported.
Kavukcuoglu, previously Google DeepMind’s chief technology officer, will run the unit as senior vice president of Google DeepMind. He is not taking the CEO title and will retain his parallel job as Google’s chief AI architect, according to Reuters and The Verge.
The distinction is more than org-chart furniture. Hassabis will no longer carry the lab’s main operational responsibilities, while Kavukcuoglu becomes the executive responsible for its day-to-day work. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said Kavukcuoglu will report to him, The Verge reported.

In a staff memo, Hassabis said he wanted “time and space” to concentrate on the larger questions around artificial general intelligence, or AGI, which he said he believes is close. AGI is a hypothetical form of AI with broad human-like cognitive capabilities, rather than a model built for a narrower set of tasks. Hassabis said he wanted to help shape its development so that it goes well for humanity, according to Reuters.
His new work will include AGI research, strategy and societal impacts, and he will have few direct reports, an Alphabet spokesperson told Reuters. Hassabis also remains chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, the drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind, Reuters and The Guardian reported.
The personnel changes coincide with the departure of four longtime Google AI and engineering figures. Dean, Ghemawat, Vinyals and Le are starting Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation that says it will pursue breakthroughs in machine learning, science and engineering, Reuters reported. Google will be a founding investor in the company, Pichai said, according to The Verge.
Dean had been chief scientist of Google DeepMind. His exit closes a notable chapter in the company’s AI consolidation: Google combined DeepMind with Google Brain in 2023, naming Hassabis CEO of the combined organization and Dean its chief scientist, Reuters reported.
Alphabet did not explain what prompted the leadership changes or why they were announced alongside the departures, Reuters reported. That leaves the company’s formal account narrower than the surrounding speculation. Reuters reported investor and industry concerns about competition from Anthropic and OpenAI and a delayed flagship Gemini release, but neither Alphabet nor its executives identified those pressures as the reason for this reshuffle.
The confirmed result is straightforward: Hassabis stays central to Alphabet’s longer-term AI agenda, Kavukcuoglu gets the operating job, and four senior researchers are building outside Google.
