FBI Director Kash Patel is facing questions from both Democratic lawmakers and Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley over his use of government resources, including FBI aircraft, bureau-purchased vehicles and alleged travel perks requested during official trips, according to reporting by MS NOW.

MS NOW said whistleblower accounts provided to Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary committees alleged that Patel sought special treatment from FBI staff while traveling at taxpayer expense. The accounts described requests that included helicopter tours and jet ski outings, according to the outlet.

The allegations have not been accepted by the FBI. Ben Williamson, an FBI spokesperson, told MS NOW that Patel has reimbursed the government for personal expenses. The bureau’s position, as reported, is that Patel’s conduct was proper.

Grassley, the Republican chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also pressed Patel for records. MS NOW reported that it reviewed a May letter from Grassley asking Patel for information about travel on FBI aircraft and the bureau’s purchase of BMW vehicles. MS NOW had first reported on the BMW purchases in December.

Grassley’s letter asked whether Patel reimbursed the FBI for any personal travel on bureau aircraft and requested records if he had, according to MS NOW. That is the basic oversight question here: if the flights were personal, who paid, and where is the paperwork?

Whistleblower claims center on travel demands

Democrats on the Judiciary committees said they received accounts that Patel’s travel placed unusual demands on FBI personnel, according to MS NOW. The reported allegations include claims that bureau employees were expected to arrange personal entertainment during trips.

One allegation described by the Democrats concerned FBI personnel in Brussels. According to MS NOW, Democrats said they had been told Patel demoted staff there because they did not keep him sufficiently entertained. The Democrats also said concerns over the emphasis on Patel’s personal entertainment during foreign travel may have contributed to the resignation of the head of the FBI’s international operations this year.

Those are serious claims, and they remain claims. MS NOW attributed them to whistleblower accounts given to Democratic committee members. The FBI denies wrongdoing, and Williamson said Patel paid back the government for personal costs.

The BMW issue is less obviously scandalous on its own. The original commentary around the vehicle purchases has included the possibility that replacing Chevrolet Suburbans with BMW X5s could save money, depending on procurement and operating costs. That does not answer the separate questions about aircraft use, personal travel or staff time.

Grassley criticizes Democrats while asking similar questions

After MS NOW published its report, Grassley wrote on X that Democrats were “riding my coattails” on oversight of FBI aircraft and questioned why they had not shown the same interest under former FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Grassley said his oversight is consistent across administrations and accused Democrats of caring about oversight only when it helps them politically. The jab does not erase the overlap: Grassley and Democrats are both asking Patel to account for how FBI resources were used.

Patel may be called to answer these questions in a congressional setting. For now, the confirmed record is narrower than the political noise around it: MS NOW says it reviewed whistleblower allegations and Grassley’s letter, Democrats are pressing the claims, Grassley wants records, and the FBI says Patel reimbursed personal expenses.
