On WIRED’s Uncanny Valley, host Zoë Schiffer said White House director Michael Kratsios accused Chinese-owned Moonshot AI of illegally distilling Anthropic’s Fable 5 model to create Kimi K3.
Schiffer said Moonshot released Kimi K3 on Friday and that the model drew broad attention because of its reported capabilities, which she described as competitive with leading systems from OpenAI and Anthropic. The White House allegation landed days later, on Wednesday, according to the discussion.
The accusation is unresolved in the material discussed by WIRED. It is a claim from Kratsios, not a demonstrated finding presented in the episode. Brian Barrett said Kimi K3 is especially significant because it is an open-weight AI system. Schiffer said one theory for China’s open-weight strategy is that restricted access to compute has pushed Chinese labs to gain reputation and influence by releasing models others can use. OpenAI models and AI token limits also came up
