Plex users report outage disrupting access to local media

Users on Plex’s forums and Reddit said service problems were interfering with playback, even for some locally hosted libraries.

Plex users reported widespread service problems Tuesday, including failures that interfered with streaming movies and shows from their own local servers.

Multiple users posted complaints on Plex’s forums and Reddit, saying the outage was affecting core parts of the media server app. Plex is commonly used to organize and stream privately hosted media libraries, so an outage that blocks local playback lands in the most annoying possible place: users can see their own files, but may not be able to get Plex to play them through its normal apps and services.

One user on Plex’s forum said that “basically all Plex is down” unless playback was happening locally over a LAN, and even that was slow and unreliable. Other users reported trouble with matching content on their servers, the process Plex uses to identify media and attach metadata such as titles and artwork.

The Verge reported that the Plex TV website was loading slowly during the incident, though it later began loading more reliably while its report was being written. That suggests at least some parts of Plex’s hosted service were reachable intermittently, rather than being completely offline for every user at the same time.

The available user reports do not establish the cause of the outage. They do show why Plex failures tend to create louder complaints than a typical streaming-service hiccup. A Netflix outage blocks Netflix. A Plex outage can block access to a library sitting on a user’s own machine, depending on how the user connects, authenticates, and plays media through Plex’s software.

There was no complete public explanation available in the reported details for what broke or when all affected services would recover. Users seeking current status should check Plex’s own forum thread and service channels, where affected customers were already comparing symptoms and workarounds.
