iPhone 17 Ceramic Shield 2 appears tougher in a limited scratch test

Apple’s 3x scratch-resistance claim remains unverified, but one side-by-side test found the iPhone 17 glass resisted marks better than iPhone 16.

The iPhone 17 Ceramic Shield 2 appears more scratch resistant than the iPhone 16’s cover glass in one side-by-side creator test, but that is a long way from confirming Apple’s advertised threefold improvement. The test also produced chips and gouges under its hardest condition, which is the part marketing tends to leave outside the frame.

Apple introduced Ceramic Shield 2 with the iPhone 17 on September 9, 2025. In its iPhone 17 announcement, the company said the front cover had three times the scratch resistance of the previous generation and reduced glare. Apple also called it tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic. Those are company claims, not results from an independently published laboratory standard.

Apple later put the material at the center of a January 2026 ad, according to MacRumors. The commercial shows an iPhone 17 Pro being pushed face-down along a long table during a negotiation. It is an ad, so it establishes Apple’s message, not the limits of the glass.

Does iPhone 17 Ceramic Shield 2 need a screen protector?

The available evidence does not establish that a protector is unnecessary. Ceramic Shield 2 is a front-cover material intended to resist scratches; Apple’s claim does not amount to a blanket guarantee against chips, breakage, or all forms of damage. For people who want to avoid cosmetic screen damage, a screen protector remains a risk-tolerance choice.

What did the side-by-side scratch test find?

A September 2025 video by MobileReviewsEh compared iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 screens with Mohs picks, tools used to apply progressively harder scratch tests. The creator used a self-built scratching rig, said its platform applied roughly 3 to 4 newtons of weight, inspected the results under a microscope, and also performed hand-scratch tests.

  • At Mohs level 6, the creator reported no apparent scratches on either phone.
  • At level 7, the iPhone 16 showed a slight scratch, while the creator said no scratch was found on the iPhone 17.
  • At level 8, scratching appeared more pronounced on the iPhone 16 than on the iPhone 17.
  • At level 9, the iPhone 17 developed chips and large gouges. The creator said the pick may have been pressed too hard, effectively puncturing the glass before it was dragged.

That comparison supplies directional evidence, not a certification. It was one creator’s nonstandard test rather than a controlled lab program, and its author said they could not determine whether Apple’s “3x” figure held up. The creator’s bottom line was narrower: the iPhone 17 screen was more scratch resistant in the comparison, while still vulnerable to damage under the harsher test.

That is enough to separate the useful claim from the oversized one. Ceramic Shield 2 showed better scratch resistance in this test. The evidence in hand does not verify Apple’s multiplier or support treating the iPhone 17 screen as invincible.
