Apple’s new iPhone Duo shares part of its name with an older accessory, but the MagSafe Duo Charger iPhone Duo comparison is less mysterious than it first appears. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s newly announced foldable phone. The MagSafe Duo Charger is a wired-to-the-wall wireless charger designed for an iPhone and an Apple Watch at the same time.

Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9 and described it as its first foldable iPhone. Preorders are scheduled to begin October 16, with availability beginning October 23, according to Apple’s announcement. The company lists a starting price of $1,999 on its product page.

What is the MagSafe Duo Charger?

The MagSafe Duo Charger is the other documented Apple product using “Duo” in its name. Apple’s support documentation, published in December 2023, says it can wirelessly charge a compatible iPhone and Apple Watch simultaneously. It has an iPhone charging surface and a movable Apple Watch charging connector, which can be used flat or raised to charge the watch on its side.

The accessory has a hinge area and can be kept in a folded position, according to Apple. That establishes a physical similarity to a foldable device, though the charger and the phone do entirely different jobs. One delivers power to two products; the other is the product being used.

Apple says the MagSafe Duo Charger is designed for all iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 models; all Apple Watch models; Apple MagSafe accessories; and Qi-certified devices and accessories. For the listed iPhones, Apple says charging can reach up to 14W under the right adapter and system conditions. The smaller iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini can receive up to 12W.

There are caveats. Apple says the Duo charger does not provide Apple Watch fast charging for Apple Watch Series 7, Series 8, or Apple Watch Ultra. Charging a non-MagSafe Qi device may also be slower than using a typical Qi charger.

What is iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo is a handset that folds open from a 5.4-inch exterior display to a 7.6-inch interior display, according to Apple. The company says the phone uses its A20 Pro chip, a precision hinge, a dual-battery design and a vapor chamber. Those are Apple product claims, not independent durability or battery-life findings.

Apple also says the phone has a titanium enclosure, IP68 water and dust resistance, and Touch ID in its side button. It plans to add Apple Pencil support later in 2026.

There is no basis in Apple’s supplied MagSafe Duo Charger documentation to say whether that older charger works with iPhone Duo. The compatibility list names iPhone 12 through iPhone 14 models, not the new foldable. Likewise, the available materials do not establish the older charger’s launch date, price, or current retail status.

That leaves the clean answer: “Duo” previously named a two-device Apple charger; it now names Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
