The AE Studio pirate job is real, according to the company’s own hiring page: the software consultancy and AI research firm wants a seafarer to help recover cargo from shipwrecks its systems identify in historical records. The listing puts the work location at “extremely remote,” which is one way to describe diving for old treasure instead of answering Slack.

AE Studio says the project sits inside its Skunkworks operation, the part of the company used for more experimental work. The basic division of labor is blunt. AE Studio claims its AI is narrowing the search area. The human hire has to get on a boat, deal with the water, and try to verify whether the math found anything worth salvaging.

What is AE Studio's pirate job?

The role is a salvage job wrapped in a joke that is only partly a joke. AE Studio is asking for someone with extensive nautical experience, diving credentials, and the ability to work in conditions the listing says insurers may refuse to cover. The person would also have to handle permits, ports, and the ordinary marine chaos that software does not fix.

The company’s preferred extras are unusually specific. AE Studio lists pre-1800 salvage experience, Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch language skills, sailing certifications, ownership of a dinghy, and operational experience in Somalia, Hormuz, or Malacca as bonuses. That is a narrow hiring funnel, even by tech standards.

Pay is pitched as a mix of salary, equity, and recovered treasure. AE Studio lists cash compensation in a $50,000 to $500,000 range, weighted toward upside, along with equity in the venture if it is spun out from AE Studio Skunkworks. The company also says the hire would receive a share of recovered cargo, while AE Studio covers logistics and legal costs.

How is AI involved in finding shipwrecks?

AE Studio says it is using AI to search 80 million pages of records covering about 500 years of Spanish colonial administration. The material includes nautical, admiralty, and insurance records. The company’s claim is that cross-referencing those documents can point to places where undiscovered wrecks and lost cargo are more likely to be found.

That kind of work is plausible in outline: old records can contain dates, routes, cargo descriptions, storms, claims, and port paperwork. The hard part is turning messy historical text into leads accurate enough to justify boats, divers, permits, and legal bills. AE Studio has not published recovered treasure from the project in the material described, and the listing warns that early dives may come back empty.

The company’s own phrasing makes the limitation clear: “the model does not swim.” In other words, the AI can rank possibilities, but it cannot inspect a seabed, identify a wreck, or bring artifacts to the surface. The hired operator would be the wet, expensive, legally exposed part of the system.

AE Studio also posted four coordinate sets tied to possible work areas. They point to ocean or coastal locations including waters near Florida, Colombia, and Tanzania, according to the coordinates shown in the listing. The company has not presented those coordinates as confirmed treasure sites.

The listing reads like a privateer fantasy filtered through a startup compensation plan, but the practical question is old-fashioned: can archival signals beat the cost and risk of salvage work at sea? AE Studio is betting that its AI can make the search area small enough for a very specialized human to matter.
