The Bhutan IEEE summit in Paro on June 9 and 10, 2026 brought the engineering group and Bhutan’s government together to discuss digital readiness, engineering education and sustainable development. The concrete support reported from the event was a six-month complimentary trial of two IEEE services for Bhutanese universities, government institutions and industries. According to IEEE Spectrum, participants discussed shifting engineering courses away from theory-heavy instruction toward practical, skills-based programs. iGroup, which says it is IEEE’s exclusive dealer in Bhutan and helped organize the gathering, reported that the Bhutanese government, IEEE and iGroup collaborated on the event. What did the Bhutan IEEE summit announce?

IEEE Spectrum said IEEE offered temporary access to the IEEE Electronic Library, delivered through IEEE Xplore, and the IEEE eLearning Library. The electronic library is described as containing more than 7 million documents, including journals, conference proceedings, standards and technical papers. The eLearning Library offers courses made by engineering, computing and technology specialists. Those services are intended to support research, teaching and technical learning; the available reports do not show which institutions used them or how.

Princess Chimi Yangzom Wangchuck urged attendees to judge technical progress against Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness principles, according to IEEE Spectrum and iGroup. The reports describe those principles in this context as centering well-being, sustainability, ethics and inclusivity. That framing puts a constraint on the summit’s technology ambitions, at least in its stated goals: new systems are meant to serve social and environmental priorities rather than operate as a scorecard for digitization alone.

Mary Ellen Randall, identified by IEEE Spectrum as IEEE’s 2026 president and CEO, said the organization’s objective was to help local universities and students develop technology consistent with sustainability and human well-being. That is an organizational aim, not a measured result.
