EA’s FC 27 Ultimate Plus edition has become the flashpoint in the company’s latest annual soccer release, after EA announced a $149.99 top-tier version of the game alongside cheaper editions. The base FC 27 Standard Edition is priced at $69.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99.
The anger is aimed less at the existence of FC 27 and more at the shape of the menu. EA is asking more than twice the Standard Edition price for the most expensive package, even though the series, formerly branded as FIFA, still follows the yearly release cadence that has defined it since 1994.
Players on X quickly compared EA’s pricing with GTA VI Ultimate, which is listed at $99.99 and includes extras such as side missions, activities, vehicles, weapons, outfits and cosmetics. On that comparison, FC 27 Ultimate Plus costs 50% more than Rockstar’s high-end GTA VI option.
What is in the FC 27 Ultimate Plus edition?
According to the announced edition details cited by players, the $149.99 FC 27 Ultimate Plus Edition includes up to seven days of early access, 10,000 FC Points spread across five months, five seasons of Premium Pass access and other bonus items. FC Points are EA’s paid currency for the franchise, so part of the price is effectively being bundled into future in-game spending.
That bundle is why some players defended the price as aimed at the game’s biggest spenders rather than the general audience. One X user argued that the edition is for people who already put money into the game, noting that “10,000 FC points is about £70/€82/$93.” For comparison, FC 26 lists 12,000 FC Points at $99.99.
Other players were much less charitable. One X user said they would pay “$200 for a game that’ll last 15-20 years,” drawing a line between a long-lived release and an annual sports title. Another complained that EA was asking “€150 for a roster update and some blue points you’ll spend on a player you’ll never use.”
The roster complaint is an old bruise for this franchise. EA releases a new soccer game every year, which means players who want current squads and the latest version are looking at at least $69.99 annually before optional editions, passes or currency enter the chat.
The GTA comparison also cuts deeper because Rockstar has kept GTA Online updated for more than a decade after a single game purchase, while EA’s soccer series resets with each annual release. That does not make the two products identical, but it explains why players are using GTA VI Ultimate as the yardstick rather than another sports game.
EA has not raised the listed price of FC 27’s Standard Edition or the $99.99 Ultimate Edition in this announcement. The backlash is concentrated on the new $149.99 ceiling, arriving while FC 26 has mixed user reviews on Steam. For a franchise already accused by some players of selling the same ritual every year with new rosters attached, Ultimate Plus gives them a cleaner target.
