Intel plans faster memory support for parts of Xeon 6

Select Xeon 6700P chips will get DDR5-8000 RDIMM support in August, while Xeon 6900P will gain second-generation MRDIMM compatibility in 2027.

Intel is preparing a mid-cycle memory update for parts of its Xeon 6 server platform, a move aimed at customers whose workloads are bumping into memory bandwidth limits rather than core counts. According to Intel, select Xeon 6 6700P processors will add support for DDR5-8000 registered DIMMs as soon as August, up from the current DDR5-6400 ceiling.

The company also plans to bring second-generation MRDIMM support to Xeon 6900P processors in the first quarter of 2027. That update is about module compatibility, not a new speed tier: Intel is not saying Xeon 6900P systems will run those newer MRDIMMs at their headline frequencies.

Intel senior director Srini Krishna laid out the plan in a company blog post, arguing that memory bandwidth has become a constraint for modern AI workloads. That is the vendor case, at least. The practical change is narrower: only some Xeon 6700P SKUs are slated for the DDR5-8000 RDIMM upgrade, and Intel has not named the exact parts.

Why DDR5-8000 can work on Granite Rapids

ServeTheHome reports that Intel appears to be reusing work already done for Granite Rapids’ memory controller. Xeon 6 launched before JEDEC had finalized DDR5-8000, but Intel built the controller to handle high signaling rates for MRDIMM support. MRDIMMs use multiplexing on the module side to present more bandwidth over the memory interface, with first-generation parts reaching up to 8800 MT/s.

That matters because the CPU still needs a memory controller capable of running cleanly at high speeds. Now that conventional RDIMMs have reached DDR5-8000, Intel can qualify some existing Xeon 6700P chips for faster standard server DIMMs rather than reserving those speeds for MRDIMM configurations.

On paper, moving from DDR5-6400 to DDR5-8000 raises peak bandwidth by 25%. Intel claims its own testing shows a 20% measured memory-bandwidth gain. The company is more modest on application performance, saying it sees a 3% to 6% improvement across a broad set of workloads. That tracks with the usual memory-speed story: more bandwidth helps most when bandwidth is the thing holding the job back.

Intel also claims a 6% latency improvement. ServeTheHome notes that JEDEC timings suggest a smaller change, with DDR5-8000 at 14 ns absolute latency versus 14.38 ns for DDR5-6400, roughly a 3% difference.

The upgrade appears limited to one DIMM per channel. Intel has not announced a change for two-DIMM-per-channel operation, which is harder on the memory controller. ServeTheHome says the current 2DPC limit is DDR5-5200, so systems built for maximum capacity rather than speed will not get the same bandwidth story unless Intel says otherwise.

MRDIMM Gen 2 is mostly about supply

The Xeon 6900P update is stranger. Second-generation MRDIMMs are expected to reach up to 12800 MT/s, about 60% ahead of top RDIMMs, according to ServeTheHome. Intel, however, is only promising support for the newer modules on Xeon 6900P, not those higher speeds.

Intel told ServeTheHome that Gen 2 MRDIMM support is “primarily about ecosystem evolution,” including availability, more module choices, and a forward-compatible path as the industry moves to newer MRDIMMs. The company described the benefit as platform continuity and flexibility rather than more bandwidth.

That supply-chain angle is not academic. ServeTheHome points to Micron’s catalog, which lists first-generation MRDIMMs as end-of-life. If older modules are already winding down, Xeon 6900P customers need compatibility with newer MRDIMMs even if the platform cannot use their full speed.
