Microsoft is raising the Minecraft Java system requirements for the first time in 17 years, a change the company says is meant to keep the game running smoothly now and in future updates. The practical effect is less cozy: PCs that were good enough under the old Java Edition guidance may now sit below the new minimum, and Microsoft is no longer promising acceptable performance or visual quality on that hardware.

The new baseline for Minecraft: Java Edition is Windows 10 64-bit, Windows on ARM, macOS 12 or later, or 64-bit Linux. Microsoft lists the new minimum CPUs as an Intel Core i3-10100, AMD Ryzen 3 3100, Qualcomm Snapdragon X, or Apple M1. On graphics, the minimum moves to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 460, Intel Arc A310, or integrated graphics in an Intel i5-6400. Memory now starts at 8GB with a discrete GPU, or 12GB when using integrated graphics.

The recommended tier is steeper. Microsoft now recommends Windows 11 64-bit, macOS 14 or later, or 64-bit Linux; an Intel Core i5-12400, AMD Ryzen 5 5600, or Apple M2 Pro; and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A580. The recommended RAM figure is 16GB.

What are the new Minecraft Java system requirements?

  • Minimum OS: Windows 10 64-bit, Windows on ARM, macOS 12 or later, or 64-bit Linux.

  • Minimum CPU: Intel Core i3-10100, AMD Ryzen 3 3100, Qualcomm Snapdragon X, or Apple M1.

  • Minimum GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 460, Intel Arc A310, or Intel i5-6400 integrated graphics.

  • Minimum memory: 8GB with a discrete GPU, or 12GB with integrated graphics.

  • Recommended memory: 16GB.

That is a sharp jump from the old Java Edition floor. The previous minimum allowed Windows 7 or macOS 10.14.5 Mojave or later, an Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-8600, or Apple M1, Intel HD Graphics 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 graphics, and 2GB of memory. The old recommended spec was also much lighter: Windows 10 or macOS 10.14.5 Mojave or later, an Intel Core i5-4690, AMD A10-7800, or Apple M1, an Nvidia GeForce 700-series or AMD Radeon RX 200-series GPU, and 4GB of memory.

Microsoft said the revised recommendations will not immediately block players from launching Java Edition. According to the company, computers below the new minimum should still be able to start the game today, but performance and visuals are no longer guaranteed. Microsoft also warned that Java Edition may struggle or fail to launch on below-spec machines later.

The company tied that warning to a graphics technology shift. Microsoft said Minecraft: Java Edition is moving away from OpenGL and toward Vulkan. In plain English, that means the game is changing the graphics interface it relies on to talk to GPUs, and older hardware that worked under the previous renderer may not remain supported forever.

Players with older PCs have one fallback Microsoft still lists with lower requirements: Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Its minimum spec remains Windows 10 19041.0 or higher, an Intel Celeron J4105 or AMD FX-4100, Intel HD Graphics 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 graphics, and 4GB of memory. Its recommended memory is 8GB. The tradeoff is obvious for Java players: Bedrock is a different edition, and switching may mean giving up Java-specific mods.
