A Nvidia N1X Surface Laptop prototype has surfaced in testing, and the early picture is messy in the way pre-release hardware often is: intriguing silicon, broken software, and performance numbers that say more about the state of the drivers than the finished product.

TechPowerUp forum user Fouquin said they spent a month with a Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra prototype built around Nvidia’s RTX Spark N1X system-on-chip. The machine is not a retail laptop, and Fouquin repeatedly framed the testing as limited. They also said they are not an AI specialist, though they still tried parts of the Phoronix AI benchmark suite.

What is the Nvidia N1X chip in the Surface Laptop Ultra?

The N1X is described as an ARM-based chip aimed at portable AI work outside the data center. According to the details reported by Fouquin, it combines 10 MediaTek-designed CPU cores in a five-performance, five-efficiency layout, with multithreading for 20 threads, and a GPU said to sit around desktop RTX 4070 or mobile RTX 5070 class.

The key architectural hook is unified memory. The platform can reportedly use up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X as a shared pool for CPU and GPU work, a design that can help local AI workloads that need more memory than many discrete laptop GPUs provide. Fouquin’s prototype had 24 GB, which still complicates clean comparisons with desktop RTX cards that often have less VRAM.

In practice, the software stack appears nowhere near done. Fouquin said the system arrived with Nvidia 591.33 drivers dated November 2025, then moved to 616.00 preview drivers that added CUDA and Vulkan support. Even then, the Phoronix CUDA tests did not return usable results, and many AI tests failed or behaved inconsistently.

Some Vulkan results did run, and Fouquin said performance landed roughly near an RTX 4070 in at least some workloads. That is the generous reading. The less flattering reading is that power management and driver behavior dominated the tests. Fouquin reported erratic thermal design power behavior, odd power-plan results, and no meaningful difference between plugged-in and battery operation.

The CPU scores were more concrete. Fouquin reported 1,386 points in Cinebench 2024 multi-threaded testing, behind a 12-core MacBook Pro with M4 Pro. In Cinebench 2026, the prototype scored 5,771, also behind Apple’s M4 Max in the comparison cited by the tester.

GPU testing was similarly uneven. Fouquin said the older driver produced the best 3DMark results, with Port Royal running at 26 to 31 frames per second and Nomad at 20 to 21 frames per second. Unigine Superposition improved on the newer 616.00 driver, reaching 56 to 58 frames per second. Against desktop cards, Fouquin said those figures looked closer to RTX 3060 or RTX 3060 Ti territory than the higher-end comparisons suggested for the chip.

Games ran, but not gracefully. Fouquin said most of the tested game library launched, yet performance was sluggish, with multi-second pauses and GPU clocks changing unpredictably. Helldivers 2 crashed the system, as did GPGPU integer tests. The games were presumably running through an ARM emulation layer, which can add its own performance and compatibility problems.

Fouquin’s broader take was not that N1X is doomed. They suggested the problems looked tied to this prototype implementation and its unfinished software. The hardware itself drew praise for build quality, keyboard feel, touchpad input, and display quality.

Serviceability was less convincing. Fouquin opened the laptop and found that while the machine could technically be accessed, thin snap-on aluminum panels covered major components, including the SSD. Their assessment was that servicing it would risk bending or breaking parts. For a prototype, that may change. For now, the Surface Laptop Ultra looks like a useful warning label for early benchmark leaks: the chip may be interesting, but the laptop is not finished.
