The Photon Matrix mosquito laser is now being marketed for direct order after its crowdfunding campaign, with the company pitching a sensor-guided device that targets mosquitoes in flight. Its own site links customers to a store, although the same site uses both “Buy Now” and “Pre-order” language. That makes the practical status less tidy than the sales copy suggests: an order page is not proof of stock, delivery timing or real-world performance.
Tom’s Hardware reported that the infrared model, presented for home use, costs $988. The blue-laser version, which the company presents for industrial use, is listed at $1,088. The report said the company’s latest crowdfunding update had said mass production was under way and that initial shipments were expected later that month, but the available reporting does not establish subsequent fulfillment.
How does the Photon Matrix mosquito laser work?
Photon Matrix says the unit scans a defined plane with LiDAR, watching the distance to the background. When an object changes that measurement, the company says its system checks whether the object fits its mosquito-targeting criteria. A galvo mechanism then aims the laser using returned LiDAR data, firing along the same optical path to disable the insect’s wings, according to the company.
The company says the laser will not fire when it lacks a solid background or when that background is beyond the effective range. Tom’s Hardware also reported that the campaign described a six-meter radius, a 90-degree horizontal scan, and detection of targets measuring 2 mm to 20 mm and moving no faster than 1 meter per second. Those are company and campaign claims, not independently verified specifications.
Tom’s Hardware said the device is described as using LiDAR, mmWave radar and an AI vision module for target detection. The available material does not document the specific job assigned to each of those systems.
What is different about the infrared and blue-laser versions?
In a February crowdfunding update, the Photon Matrix team said its internal tests found the blue laser acquired targets more quickly and achieved higher target-acquisition rates than the infrared version. It also said visible blue light could be disruptive indoors at night, placing that version in outdoor or light-insensitive settings.
The company described the infrared model as invisible and better suited to light-sensitive indoor spaces, while acknowledging in that update that its internal testing found slightly lower mosquito-elimination effectiveness than the blue version. Those comparisons come from the manufacturer’s own tests.
What remains unverified?
Photon Matrix embeds videos of its device in action on its website, and Tom’s Hardware characterized them as manufacturer test videos. Neither the company videos nor the available reporting supply independent reviewer results showing how consistently the unit identifies mosquitoes, handles other small flying insects, or performs outside the company’s testing.
Safety documentation is also incomplete in the material available. Tom’s Hardware reported that the manufacturer said the device had passed unspecified stringent certifications. But its February update had said it planned to begin applications in April for CE, FCC, FDA and IEC 60825-1 laser-safety-related certification. Named certificates, standards-specific records and test reports were not identified in the available reporting.
For now, Photon Matrix has a direct-order pitch and a very expensive hardware claim. Independent reviews and identifiable certification documentation are still not included in the available reporting.
