The Steam Deck Game Boy mod called SteamBoy has reached the point where its core hardware is assembled and running, but it is not yet a self-contained handheld. Its builder, Reddit user PhyFawkes, has put parts from Valve’s LCD Steam Deck into a Game Boy-sized vertical shell, according to Tom’s Hardware and the builder’s posts. Until its internal screen works, the device has to send video to an external monitor.
That distinction is the whole story. SteamBoy is a personal work in progress, not hardware from Valve or Nintendo, and the display problem remains between a compact proof of concept and a portable gaming device.
What works in the Steam Deck Game Boy mod now?
PhyFawkes said the build includes a functional LCD Steam Deck motherboard, battery, speakers and the face buttons visible on the front. Tom’s Hardware reported that those parts fit within Game Boy dimensions without custom PCBs at this stage.
The cooling arrangement is also installed. The modder used a 30-by-7mm fan and heatsink, held in place with a custom 3D-printed mount, Tom’s Hardware reported. PhyFawkes said that with some undervolting, gaming temperatures landed between 70C and 80C. Those are builder-reported results, not measurements from an independent test lab.
The project has been demonstrated while connected to a monitor, according to Tom’s Hardware and TweakTown. That shows the Steam Deck hardware can operate in the smaller enclosure; it does not demonstrate portable play on the unit’s own display.
Why is SteamBoy’s built-in screen not working yet?
PhyFawkes plans to install a 1200-by-1080, 90Hz AMOLED panel originally intended for VR. The builder’s Reddit post says the panel needs a custom adapter PCB to connect it with the Steam Deck’s display ribbon cable. Tom’s Hardware reported that the adapter board is in the works.
A BIOS modification is also planned after the adapter PCB is complete. Reporting says PhyFawkes expects that firmware work before the system recognizes the panel, and compared the intended change with work used in the DeckHD and Deck Sight projects. The precise outcome will remain unproven until the screen integration is finished.
