The Steam Hardware Survey July 2026 has two new leaders: graphics cards with 16GB of video memory are the largest VRAM group, and eight-core processors are the leading CPU core-count category. The margins are thin, and the data does not declare older hardware dead. It does show where the distribution of participating Steam users has moved.
Valve’s July results place 16GB VRAM systems at 25.90% of the combined Windows, Mac and Linux survey, according to reporting by Tom’s Hardware and Neowin. That puts them 0.58 percentage points ahead of 8GB systems at 25.32%.
Eight-core CPUs took the parallel lead among processor configurations, at 27.85% of surveyed systems. Six-core machines were close behind, at about 27.5%, according to Tom’s Hardware and Digital Foundry.
Does 16GB being most popular mean most Steam users have it?
No. “Most popular” here means a plurality, the largest single bucket in a set of buckets. Neowin reports that all VRAM categories below 16GB total 62.89% of respondents. A 16GB card is therefore the leading individual configuration, not the configuration held by most surveyed Steam users.
The same caution applies to processor counts. An eight-core CPU category can lead a survey while plenty of systems remain in six-core, four-core and other groups. Tom’s Hardware reported that four-core CPUs still accounted for 13.2% of the July sample.
What Steam’s survey can and cannot show
Valve says its Hardware & Software Survey is conducted monthly and participation is optional and anonymous. It is useful as a measure of the hardware reported by Steam participants, but it is not a census of all PCs, all game players or new hardware sales. The survey also offers separate platform views, while the figures above use its combined Windows, Mac and Linux results.
That distinction matters when translating a chart into purchasing doctrine. The figures establish which configurations were reported most often in July. They do not establish that an 8GB GPU or six-core processor cannot run a particular game, nor do they identify why people changed hardware.
Individual GPU rankings are a separate table from VRAM capacity. Neowin reported Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 as the most-used individual GPU at 3.71%, followed by the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU at 3.44%. Those shares describe named models, not the share of users in an 8GB or 16GB memory tier.
The broader picture is a gradual shift rather than a clean break: 16GB VRAM and eight-core CPUs now occupy the biggest individual slots in Steam’s survey, while lower-spec groups still comprise a substantial part of the installed base.
