IEEE’s new leadership conference in Budapest will focus on turning technical judgment into organizational influence.

The tech expert to leader transition is the subject of IEEE’s inaugural International Leadership Conference, scheduled for 3 and 4 October in Budapest. IEEE Spectrum says registration is open for the event, which is aimed at mid-career STEM professionals taking on broader responsibility.

The conference’s premise is familiar to anyone promoted because they were good at the hard part: technical output alone does not settle the job once the work involves competing priorities, other teams, and decisions with business or ethical consequences. IEEE presents the shift as one from individual expertise toward systems thinking, team alignment, and adaptive leadership.

That framing is guidance from the conference organizers, not a demonstrated formula for promotion. Still, it identifies the practical change in the unit of impact. An individual contributor is mainly judged on answers and delivery. An organizational leader has to use technical judgment to help people make trade-offs, coordinate work, and pursue a shared direction.

How does a tech expert become an organizational leader?

Daniel Sniezek, an IEEE Life Senior Member and cochair of the conference program committee, says technical professionals need to account for the wider system around an engineering decision. That includes its business, operational, and ethical effects, rather than treating a technically elegant answer as the whole answer.

In practice, IEEE’s guidance centers on trust and framing. Leaders build credibility across teams, connect an initiative to organizational goals, and stop treating themselves as the sole keeper of technical knowledge. The work shifts toward helping collaborators contribute and making a case that others can act on.

A 2024 post from leadership-development firm Nebo makes a related observation: organizations often elevate technical specialists into people-management jobs on the strength of subject-matter expertise, even though those employees may not have been taught to lead teams. Nebo recommends coaching and development programs focused on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Those are the firm’s recommendations, not independently established outcomes.

Influence without the org-chart magic

IEEE also casts internal innovation as an intrapreneurship problem. The point is not to pick a fight with an established company structure. The suggested approach is to identify an unmet opportunity, build colleagues’ trust, and describe the proposed project as a route to the organization’s longer-term goals.

Deyasini Majumdar, an IEEE Senior Member and the program committee’s other cochair, advises professionals to use strategic thinking and leadership before someone formally assigns them a leadership title. IEEE’s planned sessions include evaluating internal moves, developing lateral and upward trust, pitching innovative projects, and handling rapidly expanding responsibility.

The program raises burnout as a question for people assuming more responsibility, but does not offer a particular prevention method. It also treats leadership as a two-way exchange across generations: emerging leaders can draw on executive experience, while senior leaders need to remain open to learning and adapting with colleagues.

For technical professionals, retaining expertise is still part of the job. The proposed pivot is to deploy that expertise in service of other people’s capability and the organization’s choices, rather than making personal output the sole measure of value.
