Wii U SSD upgrade kit adds internal M.2 storage for $21.99

The Peaceful Outcome’s kit lets Wii U owners install SATA or NVMe M.2 storage, but it requires opening the console and custom firmware.

The Wii U SSD upgrade crowd just got a tidier option: The Peaceful Outcome has announced a $21.99 internal M.2 kit that lets Nintendo Wii U owners move beyond the console’s original 8GB or 32GB storage without leaving an external drive dangling off the machine.

The kit, sold through The Peaceful Outcome’s shop, supports SATA and NVMe M.2 drives. Owners still have to supply the drive. According to the company, the upgrade can take the console to 1TB or more, depending on the SSD installed, and lets games load from internal storage rather than from discs or an external USB drive.

The board also includes a USB port for file transfers after installation. That matters because, once the kit is inside the Wii U, owners should not need to reopen the console just to move data onto the SSD.

How does the Wii U SSD upgrade work?

The kit installs inside the Wii U and connects an M.2 SSD through an interposer board, giving the console internal solid-state storage. An SSD stores data on flash memory rather than spinning platters, which is why it can be smaller and more durable than a hard drive; Kernel has a plain-language guide to how SSDs compare with HDDs.

The Peaceful Outcome already sells internal hard drive mounting kits for the Wii U, including a 3.5-inch SATA kit at the same $21.99 price and a 2.5-inch version for $17.99. The company said it made the M.2 version mainly because M.2 NVMe drives should be easier to find in the future.

That future-proofing does not turn the Wii U into a fast storage platform. The Peaceful Outcome said there is no speed or feature gain from using NVMe instead of SATA in this console. It also said SSDs load only 7.5% faster than the Wii U’s DVD drive and 6% faster than a hard drive.

So the pitch is capacity and neatness, not magic benchmark dust. The Wii U can already use external drives, but an internal kit avoids the extra box, cable clutter and permanent accessory pile that tends to grow around old consoles.

What do owners need before installing it?

The upgrade is not a plug-in accessory. Owners need to open the Wii U, install the hardware and provide their own SATA or NVMe M.2 SSD. They also need homebrew software and the custom Aroma firmware so the console can use the storage setup.

That software step carries risk. The installation process has a guide, but modifying console firmware can brick the device, and the report describes a small chance of that happening. Anyone expecting a normal Nintendo-supported storage upgrade will not find one here.

The Peaceful Outcome said previous buyers of its drive upgrade kits can get updated parts for the cost of shipping. Those users need to update the firmware on their interposer board to use the newer setup.

For Wii U owners already running homebrew, the M.2 kit offers a cleaner way to keep a larger game library on the console. For everyone else, the price of the board is only the first cost; the real buy-in is opening the hardware and accepting the custom-firmware risk.
