Microsoft says it has started work on Windows 11 8GB RAM optimization, aiming to make the operating system behave better on PCs with 8GB of memory and above. In a Windows blog update, the company said the memory work is part of a broader March 2026 commitment to improve Windows 11 performance, reliability and updates.
The move lands in an awkward hardware market. Microsoft lists 4GB of RAM as the official minimum for Windows 11, but Tom's Hardware notes that many PC builders treat 16GB as the practical floor for a smooth everyday machine. Microsoft has also previously recommended 32GB for gamers who want a more future-proof Windows 11 setup, according to Tom's Hardware.
That advice is colliding with a RAM shortage. Tom's Hardware reports that the component crunch has pushed users and manufacturers toward lower memory capacities and slower DDR4 memory. The same reporting says some experts expect entry-level PCs to disappear by 2028, while some manufacturers, including Apple, have brought back 8GB laptops to meet lower price targets.
Will Windows 11 run better on 8GB RAM?
Microsoft says it is optimizing Windows 11 for systems with 8GB of RAM and above, with the goal of reducing the operating system's memory footprint. A smaller OS footprint means Windows itself should take up less working memory, leaving more RAM for apps, browser tabs and games.
The company has not framed 8GB as the new ideal Windows 11 configuration. The stated work is about making the OS less wasteful on machines that already exist, and on cheaper machines that may be sold with 8GB because memory is expensive or scarce.
Microsoft's blog update also points to other Windows 11 work tied to the same quality push. The company said it is expanding its focus to include a faster out-of-the-box setup experience, simpler parental controls and better voice interactions.
What has Microsoft changed in Windows 11 so far?
According to Microsoft, Windows 11 has already received or is testing improvements across several familiar pain points:
- A better Windows Search experience.
- More customization options for the Taskbar and Start menu.
- A more responsive and more reliable File Explorer.
- Other Windows 11 quality changes still moving through preview channels.
Many of those changes remain in preview, Microsoft said. Users outside the Windows Insider Program may have to wait weeks or months before they see them on regular Windows 11 installs.
The competitive pressure is not theoretical. Tom's Hardware reported that after Microsoft ended Windows 10 support, MacBooks saw a sales bump as some users chose macOS instead of buying Windows 11 PCs. The outlet also noted growing interest in SteamOS among gamers, with Valve working on a general release of that operating system.
For Microsoft, the memory-footprint work is a defensive repair job as much as a performance project. If budget Windows 11 laptops ship with 8GB of RAM during a component shortage, users will judge the software by how those machines feel under normal load. Windows does not get extra credit for needing hardware the market is no longer eager to provide.
