Audi has unveiled the 2027 Audi Q9, a new full-size, three-row SUV that moves the brand into a larger segment than the Q7 and gives it a fresh flagship while the future of the A8 sedan remains unsettled. Ars Technica reported from Audi’s Munich event that the Q9 is aimed at the American-style luxury SUV class associated with models such as the Cadillac Escalade.
The timing is slightly awkward for anyone who assumed the Q7 already filled this role. Audi showed a third-generation Q7 in June, but that SUV was described as being built primarily around European needs, including a third row better suited to children or occasional use. The Q9 is the bigger answer for markets where buyers expect a proper full-size luxury SUV rather than a stretched family hauler pretending to be one.

The 2027 Audi Q9 is Audi’s new range-topping full-size SUV, positioned above the Q7. According to Ars Technica, Audi does not yet have concrete plans to replace the A8 sedan, which leaves the Q9 as the brand’s top model for now.
The numbers explain the job. Audi’s Q9 measures 209 inches long, 79.2 inches wide and 71.4 inches tall. Its wheelbase is 123.5 inches, which is 5.6 inches longer than the Q7’s wheelbase. Ars Technica reported that much of that added length goes toward making the third row more useful.

Ars Technica described the Q9 in person as large but less imposing than a Mercedes-Benz GLS or BMW X7. Its body uses more curved panels and softer creases than recent Audis, according to the report, and its proportions give it something of a scaled-up wagon look. That is a very Audi way to enter the Escalade neighborhood: bring the square footage, then try to pretend it is all restraint and tailoring.
