WIRED’s latest best Dyson vacuum 2026 testing has put the Dyson Gen5Detect at the top of its list, with the V16 Piston Animal close behind and the V10 Konical named the better-value option for buyers trying not to donate a mortgage payment to floor dust.
The July 2026 update follows side-by-side testing of Dyson’s newer cordless models against older favorites. WIRED says the Gen5Detect produced the strongest overall result among five Dyson vacuums tested: the Gen5Detect, V16 Piston Animal, V15 Detect, V10 Konical, and V8 Cyclone.
The tests included Cheerios on carpet, cat litter on hard floors, sand on rugs, general cleaning around a three-story home, and handheld-mode use. WIRED says the Gen5Detect struggled more with sand on a thin rug, but cleared sand from a thicker rug in one pass.
Which Dyson vacuum is best in 2026?
WIRED’s pick is the Dyson Gen5Detect. The vacuum has 262 air watts of suction, a motor rated at 35,000 rpm, up to 70 minutes of run time, a HEPA filter, and a 0.2-gallon bin, according to the guide.
The Gen5Detect ships with Dyson’s Digital Motorbar cleaner head for carpets and a Fluffy Optic cleaner head for hard floors. The Fluffy Optic head uses a green light to make dust and debris easier to see; WIRED says the Gen5Detect’s version is twice as bright as earlier implementations.
Air watts measure suction power by combining airflow and vacuum pressure. They are useful for comparing vacuums from the same category, though head design, flooring type, and debris size still affect real cleaning performance.

WIRED says the V10 Konical performed better than expected, beating the more expensive V15 Detect in its sand-on-rug test and outperforming the cheaper V8 Cyclone across the side-by-side tests. It lacks a dedicated hard-floor head and an LCD readout for battery life or debris information.
Where does the V16 Piston Animal fit?
The Dyson V16 Piston Animal is the power play in WIRED’s picks. It has 315 air watts of suction, up to 70 minutes of run time, HEPA filtration, a 0.2-gallon bin, and a larger accessory set than the other recommended models.
WIRED says the V16 finished just behind the Gen5Detect overall. It performed well on carpets and rugs, though it also had trouble on a thin rug in the test set.
