The Trump administration’s first Genesis Mission grants will send $5 billion to 278 AI-driven science projects, putting federal money behind a bet that machine learning can speed up research in areas from drug discovery to energy and robotics.

The White House has described the Genesis Mission as an effort with ambition comparable to the Manhattan Project. The Energy Department, which led this funding round, said the work will connect national laboratories, companies and universities in pursuit of advances in energy, discovery science and national security. Politico reported that the projects were chosen from more than 5,000 applications.

Technology companies are also attached to the program. Google, Microsoft and OpenAI are among the firms contributing compute, AI credits and other support, according to reports cited in the announcement coverage.

What are the Genesis Mission grants?

The Genesis Mission grants are federal awards for research projects that use artificial intelligence as a tool for scientific discovery. The mechanism is straightforward enough: researchers get money and, in some cases, access to AI infrastructure, then use models and computing resources to search for patterns, generate candidates, simulate materials or otherwise accelerate lab work that would usually move more slowly.

Michael Kratsios, President Donald Trump’s science adviser, tied the program to the administration’s broader “Golden Age” science agenda, Politico reported. That agenda favors artificial intelligence, robotics and nuclear energy, while reducing emphasis on life sciences, according to accounts of Kratsios’ Capitol Hill presentation and the White House’s own science policy materials.

The policy document is styled as a modern answer to Vannevar Bush’s 1945 report “Science, the Endless Frontier,” which shaped the postwar federal research system. Its proposals include shifting support away from institutions and toward individual scientists, giving private companies a larger role in research and giving political appointees more authority to stop grants they oppose.

Researchers quoted by The Verge were not buying the sales pitch. Claes de Vreese, a professor of AI and society at the University of Amsterdam, said venture-capital logic cannot be used to force scientific breakthroughs while treating the patent as if it is already on the shelf. Jason Shepherd, a neurobiology professor at the University of Utah, said scientists would welcome faster peer review, more stability and better incentives for risky research, but argued that academic science does not work like a startup.

Several critics focused on the administration’s view of universities. Jeffrey Flier, a Harvard professor and former dean of Harvard Medical School, told The Verge the plan lacks a real account of how science works and called it a threat to research funding and operations. Carl Bergstrom, a University of Washington biology professor, said federal agencies do more than chase inventions: they help sustain the US science, technology, engineering and math ecosystem.

The AI emphasis drew its own warnings. Andreas Karch, a physics professor at the University of Texas at Austin, told The Verge that much current AI-generated science is low-quality and still needs expert human judgment. His concern is blunt: universities train the people who can tell useful model output from garbage, while the administration is also pressuring those same institutions through funding cuts and grant cancellations.

The agenda also contains unresolved definitions. Shepherd pointed to language that would reduce support for “life sciences” while increasing support for “foundational research in the biological sciences,” categories that overlap. The White House has not defined the terms in a way that makes clear which fields would lose or gain support, according to the New York Times.

The result is a science policy split between a large AI funding push and a broader restructuring that many researchers see as political control wearing a lab coat. The grants are real money. Whether they produce a stronger research system, or just a better-funded pipeline for favored AI projects, remains the fight.
