Meta is rolling out a Meta AI assistant update that lets its chatbot pull from a user’s calendar, prepare daily briefings, help plan events and run research that users can redirect while it is working, the company said in a blog post.
The move pushes Meta AI toward the same productivity turf occupied by Google’s Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. Meta said the update is powered by its Muse Spark 1.1 model, which the company says expands the chatbot beyond answering questions, making images and drafting documents.
Meta framed the release as its “next step toward personal superintelligence,” a phrase CEO Mark Zuckerberg has used while describing the company’s AI ambitions. Strip away the grand label and the product change is more concrete: Meta wants its chatbot to remember tasks, consult scheduling data and act on recurring requests without being prompted from scratch every time.
What can Meta AI do after the update?
According to Meta, the updated assistant can generate a summary of a user’s day from calendar information, find restaurants for an event and check the calendar for a workable date. It can also search Facebook Marketplace for used furniture that fits a kitchen renovation budget.
Meta said users can set up some tasks once and then let Meta AI keep doing them. The examples the company gave include regular calendar briefings, weekly meal plans and product restock alerts.
The calendar access is the important mechanism here. A chatbot that can read schedule data can move from generic advice, such as suggesting a dinner plan, to constrained suggestions, such as picking a day that is actually open. That also means the feature depends on what users allow Meta AI to access, though Meta’s announcement, as described, focuses on the new capabilities rather than broader privacy mechanics.
Meta changes its AI pitch
The update marks a shift from Meta’s earlier public posture around its assistant. The Verge’s Alex Heath previously reported that Meta chief product officer Chris Cox told employees last year the company’s aim was to focus on entertainment and connecting with friends, rather than obsessing over productivity like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
Meta is now offering the sort of productivity features it had treated as someone else’s lane. The company says Meta AI is better at collecting and summarizing information from across the web and turning it into a report, presentation or plan. Users can also change the direction of a response while it is being generated, a pattern already familiar to people who use ChatGPT.
That does not prove Meta AI is suddenly a dependable executive assistant. Meta’s claims are product claims, and the release details do not include independent benchmarks or reliability data. The confirmed change is that Meta is adding more action-oriented surfaces: calendars, recurring tasks, research workflows and planning tools.
Where is the new Meta AI available?
Meta said the updated assistant is rolling out today in select markets through the Meta AI app and on the web. The company said it plans to bring the features to more countries and to other platforms, including WhatsApp, in the coming weeks.
For users, the practical question is whether Meta can make these assistant features useful without turning them into another notification hose. The company has the distribution, especially through WhatsApp and Facebook. Now it is trying to prove that its chatbot can do more than answer prompts and generate images on command.
