Meta plans to stop adding operating-system features to the Quest 2 and Quest Pro in March 2027. For owners searching for Meta Quest 2 updates 2027, the important distinction is that the headsets are not scheduled to stop working then: Meta says security patches and critical bug fixes will continue through December 2027.
The company announced the timetable on November 2. Version 213, or v213, is planned as the last OS release for both headsets and the last SDK version Meta will support on them. Meta says it expects that release to reach all Quest 2 and Quest Pro devices by March 2027.
What will still work on Quest 2 after March 2027?
Meta says people will still be able to find, buy, download and use apps on the two headsets. The Quest store will remain available, prior purchases will remain accessible, and Meta says it will not remove apps from the store because feature development has ended.
Existing apps can also keep receiving updates from their developers. Multiplayer cross-play between Quest 2 or Quest Pro owners and people using Quest 3 or Quest 3S is due to remain available. Meta also says PC VR through Link, existing platform SDK features and the final release of its Avatars SDK will continue to function on the older hardware.
That is not a blanket promise that every app will remain compatible indefinitely. Meta says developers may keep updating their existing Quest 2 and Quest Pro apps, so the support of a particular app after 2027 will partly depend on its developer. Under Meta's app policies, a developer ending support in a way that removes access to content or essential services must give customers at least 180 days' notice, according to Meta.
What changes after the final Quest 2 OS release?
New OS features, platform capabilities and APIs released after v213 will be limited to Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer devices, Meta says. The company also says it will no longer test newer OS and SDK releases against Quest 2 and Quest Pro. In practice, a developer that wants to retain compatibility may need to maintain an older-compatible build or separate versions for different headsets.
Meta says developers can submit new apps that support Quest 2 or Quest Pro until December 2027. After that deadline, new titles may still launch for Quest 3, Quest 3S and newer headsets, but they will not be offered for the two older devices.
When do Quest 2 security updates end?
Meta currently plans to issue quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of December 2027. Its hardware security-update policy lists both Quest 2 and Quest Pro as supported until at least that month, while noting that Meta may announce an extension as the date approaches. The policy also says a support date is not a guarantee of a device's lifespan.
Quest 2 launched in October 2020, and Quest Pro followed in 2022. The March 2027 milestone ends new platform development for the pair, rather than turning either headset into a decorative face computer on a fixed date.
