Ethernet is usually the better connection for a stationary device that needs consistent performance, lower latency, and fewer interference problems. Wi-Fi is the better fit for devices that move, guests, and rooms where running a cable would be a nuisance. Most homes benefit from using both rather than forcing one answer on the entire network.

These are two ways to connect a device to a network. Ethernet carries data over a cable to a router or network switch. Wi-Fi carries it by radio signal to a router’s wireless access point. Your internet service and the connection between a device and that service are separate matters: Ethernet or Wi-Fi affects that device’s local link, not the service plan coming into the home.

Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi: the side-by-side decision

Ethernet is worth preferring for fixed devices that handle large uploads, video streaming, or other bandwidth-hungry work, when a cable is practical. A reusable two-question rule

  1. Must the device move, or is cabling impractical? Choose Wi-Fi.

Why Wi-Fi changes from room to room

Wi-Fi is a radio link, and the room gets a vote. Distance from the router, building materials, electrical devices, and other wireless use can affect the connection. A strong result beside the router does not establish what a device will experience elsewhere in the home.
