The microsoft copilot app merger is underway: Microsoft is combining the consumer Microsoft Copilot app and Microsoft 365 Copilot into one app called Microsoft Copilot. The change puts personal and work access behind one updated icon and interface, but it is preparation for a broader Copilot product Microsoft has separately promised, not the launch of that product.
According to Microsoft, as reported by The Verge, existing consumer Copilot users will bring their chats and content into the updated app. People using Microsoft 365 Copilot will get minor navigation changes, the new icon, and access to Copilot chat. Users who have both apps will see their chats and content consolidated in the updated app.
What changes in the Microsoft Copilot app merger?
One application can hold both a personal Microsoft account and a work or school Microsoft Entra ID account, with users able to switch between them. Microsoft says the two account types will remain separate inside the app: chats, content, and data will not cross between personal and work contexts.
Microsoft also says its existing enterprise security, compliance, and government controls will not change. That is the relevant boundary for organizations whose staff use the updated application with work credentials.

No. The current release merges the two existing Copilot applications. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has separately said the company is building a Copilot “super app” across consumer and commercial experiences. The Verge reported that Nadella described its intended scope as bringing together chat, coding, Cowork, and Autopilots, Microsoft’s agent-oriented capabilities.
Microsoft has said the wider product is planned for 2026, but the company has not laid out final pricing, complete feature scope, or detailed rollout mechanics. The app merger offers a fairly concrete near-term change for existing users; the eventual all-in-one Copilot remains a larger, less specified project.
For now, the practical advice is modest: check which account is active before using Copilot, expect the new icon to arrive on a staggered schedule, and be aware that Podcasts, Deep Research, and Group Chat material are affected by the August 18 transition.
