SkyFall Shrike Auterion guidance is now reaching Ukraine: the Ukrainian military began receiving SkyFall-made FPV strike drones fitted with autonomy hardware and software from U.S. company Auterion in mid-July, according to Ars Technica. The claimed benefit is bluntly practical in a jammed battlefield. After an operator designates a target, the drone can continue its final approach when GPS or its radio link is unavailable.
SkyFall makes the Shrike drone in Ukraine. Auterion supplies the Skynode S strike kit, which replaces the usual flight controller with avionics containing a microprocessor and onboard AI, Auterion co-founder and chief executive Lorenz Meier told Ars Technica. The report does not provide independent test results or battlefield performance data for the kit.
How does SkyFall Shrike Auterion guidance work?
The operator first flies the first-person-view drone into the relevant area, then designates a target at a distance of up to half a mile. From there, the operator can activate terminal guidance, the final part of a strike, in which the drone uses visual information from its main onboard camera to track and home in on the designated target.
Auterion says the system does not rely on GPS. That matters because GPS is a broadcast navigation signal that can be disrupted or jammed, as explained in how GPS works. The company says a Shrike can keep tracking after a radio connection is cut by terrain, buildings or electronic jamming.
That is autonomous terminal tracking, not independently selecting targets. Meier said the operator retains the ability to cancel a strike or select another target while the radio connection remains available. Once that connection is gone, the reported system is designed to complete the approach to the target already designated by the human operator.
What is planned for Ukraine?
SkyFall and Auterion plan to ship 50,000 equipped Shrikes in the coming months, Ars Technica reported. The order is backed by a $100 million contract funded by an unnamed European country; Reuters identified Germany as the funder, according to Ars. Meier said an equipped Shrike costs about $2,000, compared with roughly $400 for a Ukrainian drone that depends entirely on manual piloting.
The economics are part of the pitch, but they remain company-linked claims. Auterion is trying to put visual terminal guidance into short-range FPV weapons that are cheaper than conventional precision munitions, rather than presenting a new class of long-range drone.
Auterion also says the kit could receive future software updates allowing one operator to direct several drones as a group. That capability is not reported as deployed in Ukraine. The company demonstrated one pilot commanding three autonomous strike drones against three separate targets during a live-fire exercise at Camp Blanding, Florida, but gave no timetable for a Ukrainian rollout.
Ukraine has separately used interceptor drones and AI-supported systems for air defence, BBC News reported. Those systems are designed to counter incoming Russian drones; the SkyFall Shrike package described here is a ground-strike system. The distinction is less glamorous than “AI drones” as a catchall, but it is the difference between a weapon pursuing a designated target and a system defending airspace.
