Starling’s two-person sound team says microwave alerts can be improved with code, not pricier speakers or new appliance hardware.

Starling microwave sounds are a small revolt against one of appliance design’s laziest defaults: the shrill end-of-cycle beep. Sound designers Joel Corelitz and Colin Coogan have built alternative microwave alerts using the same cheap piezo buzzers and microcontroller-style programming already found in typical ovens, according to Wired.

The practical pitch is blunt. Microwave makers would not need to add speakers or redesign the appliance electronics. Corelitz told Wired that any microcontroller that accepts C++ could be programmed to produce different sounds, because microwaves already contain both a controller and a piezo buzzer.

Starling is a two-person sound design studio whose previous client work includes Sony, Microsoft, Netflix, Sega and Ford, Wired reported. For this project, Corelitz and Coogan used their own software, called Microwave Sound Bench, to test alternatives to the standard appliance chirp.

How can microwave beeps sound better without new hardware?

Most microwaves use a passive piezoelectric buzzer, a low-cost component that vibrates when electrically charged. Manufacturers can control basic parameters such as pitch and duration, which is limited compared with a speaker but still leaves room for better timing, patterns and frequency movement.

Corelitz’s test bench is deliberately bare-bones: an Arduino UNO R4 Minima, a breadboard and three piezo buzzers used for comparing output, Wired reported. One buzzer was attached to a sheet of paper to help it resonate. That is not a finished appliance design, but it is enough to show that the normal microwave beep is more a design choice than a law of physics.

Starling’s experiments include short trills, arpeggio-like patterns, falling frequency sweeps and game-like sequences. Corelitz also described using the resonant frequency range of a buzzer to create the impression of changing volume, even though the component is not actually behaving like a full speaker.

The pair also tried replacing repeated menu-button chirps with a softer click. Corelitz told Wired he tested a 4,000-Hz tone lasting one millisecond and found it worked as a more satisfying input sound.

Why do microwaves still sound so bad?

Cost is the boring answer, and the boring answer is usually the right one. Piezo buzzers cost very little and do the required job: they alert the user. Adding a speaker would raise the bill of materials in a market where appliance makers fight hard over price.

Richard Hughes, Volvo’s design lead for digital user experiences and interfaces in North America and a former principal UX designer at Whirlpool, told Wired that many appliance companies have little internal sound design expertise, even if they have engineering teams focused on product noise.

Hughes said he ran similar Arduino-and-piezo experiments while at Whirlpool. He also said a KitchenAid Pro Line toaster drew positive reactions for a softer piezo alert that users compared to a flight attendant call button. Microwaves, he told Wired, often reuse behavior specifications across products, including their sounds.

There is no public sign in Wired’s report that Panasonic, Samsung or another major microwave maker has adopted Starling’s work. Coogan said Instagram commenters claimed they would pay $50 more for a better-sounding microwave, which is market research in the loose social-media sense, not a purchase order.

Still, the mechanism is credible: change the code that drives the buzzer, and the same cheap part can sound less hostile. Corelitz told Wired he is less worried about companies copying the idea than about getting rid of annoying sounds that fail to convey useful information. For once, the fix may be cheaper than the irritation it removes.
