Ted Lasso season 4 on Apple TV began August 5 with a deliberate reset: Jason Sudeikis’ coach returns to AFC Richmond to run its second-division women’s side, the Lady Greyhounds. Apple says the 10-episode season will release one episode each Wednesday through October 7.

The move brings back one of Apple TV’s best-known original series three years after its 2023 third season, while giving it a different team, different central players and a setting built around women’s football. That is a creative refresh for a service still trying to build a catalogue of recognizable shows, not evidence that the new season has yet improved subscriptions, audience size or market share.

Apple has described Ted Lasso as a global hit and pointed to its awards record. The company said the first season was the most Emmy-nominated comedy series and that the first two seasons won consecutive Outstanding Comedy Series awards. Those are useful credentials for a returning franchise, though they are not a scorecard for season four.

What is Ted Lasso season four about?

Ted leaves Kansas City and returns to Richmond to coach the Lady Greyhounds. Apple confirmed that the new club plays in the second division. The season retains the show’s adult core, including Rebecca, Keeley, Roy, Beard and Ted, while placing new players at the center of the on-field story.

Apple’s announced newcomers include Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely. Reynolds plays Ted’s assistant, Coach Chilton. Reuters reported that the team’s circumstances are part of the premise: it has less money than Richmond’s men’s Premier League side and shares a cramped locker room for part of the week.

The show’s writers consulted people involved in women’s soccer while developing the season, Reuters reported. In an interview with the news agency, Sudeikis said Ted must work out what is appropriate in his interactions with women and girls, a problem the character did not face in the previous men’s-team setup.

A soft reboot, with some familiar faces missing

Season three ended in 2023 with Ted heading back to the United States and several major characters reaching apparent resting points. The Verge described that finale as carrying the feel of a series ending. Season four does not pick up the old men’s roster as its main engine.

The Verge reported that, in the first five episodes supplied to press, Jamie Tartt, Sam Obisanya and Dani Rojas were absent apart from brief mentions. Before the premiere, 9to5Mac also reported that those characters would not be regulars, while Ted, Rebecca, Keeley, Roy and Beard would return full-time.

That makes the new season a test of whether the series’ established characters and tone can carry a substantially rebuilt ensemble. The Verge called Ted Lasso Apple TV’s most culturally impactful show and argued that its return could help the service contend with larger streaming rivals. That remains an assessment, not a demonstrated business result. For now, Apple has revived a proven name and changed enough underneath it that viewers are being asked to meet Richmond again.

Apple’s season-four announcement lists the release schedule and returning cast. The first three seasons remain available on Apple TV.
