The Wispr AI notetaker moves the company from cleaning up dictated text into recording the conversations that produce it. Wispr’s new feature connects to a user’s calendar, produces a live transcript during a meeting, generates a summary afterward, and lets the user ask a chat-style tool follow-up questions about what was said, according to WIRED.
That is useful machinery for anyone who has lost an action item somewhere in the 47th minute of a call. It also removes one common cue that a meeting is being captured: WIRED reports that Wispr transcribes from the user’s device and does not enter the call as a visible participant.
The product was initially released for Mac, with a Windows version expected later, WIRED reported. In one hands-on test, the publication found no obvious transcription or summary mistakes in a single conversation. It also checked a quote found through Wispr’s search tool against an audio recording and found a match. That is a narrow test, not a blanket accuracy verdict for every meeting, accent, or bad office microphone.
How does the Wispr AI notetaker work?
Wispr takes meeting material and turns it into several outputs: a transcript, summary, action items, speaker labels, and other meeting insights, according to the company’s privacy policy dated July 25, 2026. The practical pitch is retrieval. Instead of scrubbing through a recording or reading a full transcript, a user can query the meeting’s context for a decision, a quote, or a task.
Wispr says Notetaker currently requires Cloud Sync, because some meeting data is synchronized across a user’s devices. Its policy says it may temporarily keep encrypted meeting audio on the device and/or in cloud storage for functions including resuming a meeting, checking transcript accuracy, improving transcription quality, and troubleshooting. The company says that on-device audio is not meant to be searchable, replayable, or exportable, and is deleted under its retention settings. Encryption can protect stored data, but it does not answer the separate questions of who may access it or how long it remains available.
Wispr says users who opt in to share material for model training may contribute pseudonymized text, transcripts, meeting outputs, and corrections. The company says meeting audio is excluded from model training unless relevant settings expressly disclose and enable it. Those are company policy statements, rather than an outside audit of how the system operates.
Why does a botless meeting recorder change disclosure?
There are three broad designs. A visible bot joins the call and can show up in the participant list. A botless recorder captures audio from a participant’s computer without taking a meeting slot. Platform-native capture uses an integration such as a meeting service’s recording API. The latter two approaches can avoid the attendee-list signal that a bot provides.
Wispr CEO Tanay Kothari told WIRED that users should disclose when the tool is transcribing, describing it as a trust issue as well as a possible legal concern. The report notes that private-conversation recording in San Francisco requires all participants’ consent. That local fact is not a universal rule, but it makes the basic operating practice hard to dispute: tell people before the substantive discussion starts.
Other products document the same tradeoff. Fellow says its visible Note Taker appears after a participant admits it and a message says recording has begun. For its botless mode, Fellow says the user must notify other participants. Its Zoom-native option can record through Zoom’s API without a Fellow bot in the roster, though Zoom’s own indicators may appear when enabled.
What should meeting participants check?
- State that transcription or recording will occur before the meeting gets underway.
- Ask whether capture uses a visible bot, local audio, or a platform integration.
- Check who can view and share transcripts, summaries, and action items.
- Review synchronization, retention, deletion, and model-training controls.
- Make sure attendees have a workable way to object, remove a bot, or stop recording.
