Apple Maps Ford EV integration is headed for Ford’s upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle Platform in 2027, Apple and Ford announced. The deal puts Apple’s navigation software directly on the vehicle’s displays through a new MapKit for Automotive software development kit, rather than relying only on a phone-projected CarPlay session.
For Ford drivers, the practical change is straightforward: the car’s built-in navigation will use Apple Maps for directions, traffic, search and electric-vehicle route planning. For Ford, the more consequential part may be the road-level map data. The company plans to use Apple Maps information as it develops a next-generation version of BlueCruise, its hands-free highway driving system.
Ford’s Latitude AI team will use that road-level information to support what Apple and Ford described as a more seamless hands-free driving experience. Ford said the data will be part of its work on BlueCruise capability intended to cover highway driving from on-ramp to off-ramp.
What will Apple Maps do in Ford EVs?
Ford’s UEV Platform will use Apple’s MapKit for Automotive SDK to provide turn-by-turn directions, natural-language guidance, live traffic and incident information, search with place cards, and route options. The companies also said the system will include EV-specific routing, including battery preconditioning.
Battery preconditioning means the vehicle can prepare its battery for charging or driving conditions ahead of time. In an EV navigation context, that can matter because the route planner knows where the driver is going and can coordinate charging-related battery behavior with the trip.
Jim Farley, Ford Motor Company’s chief executive, said Ford’s new midsize electric vehicle will be priced around $30,000. He said the Apple Maps integration will sit alongside the Ford app, Ford’s software suite and next-generation BlueCruise, all enabled by a new zonal architecture.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Services and Health, said Apple is using MapKit for Automotive to bring Maps into Ford vehicles as an integrated navigation system. Apple framed the move as an extension of Maps beyond its own app and CarPlay.
What is MapKit for Automotive?
MapKit for Automotive is Apple’s new SDK for automakers that want to embed Apple Maps into a vehicle’s own interface. According to Apple, it lets carmakers customize the map experience so it fits the vehicle’s screens and software design.
The SDK also gives automakers access to road-level information for hands-free driving features. That is the part Ford is tying to Latitude AI and future BlueCruise development. The companies did not provide technical details about the data format, coverage limits or how the system will handle edge cases, so treat the “seamless” language as a product goal, not a demonstrated result.
Apple said the automotive SDK follows the privacy principles used by the Apple Maps app. The company said it does not collect vehicle map location details and activity in a way that can be linked back to an individual user.
The announcement does not mean Ford is dropping CarPlay. Apple said CarPlay will continue to be available in Ford vehicles, giving iPhone users the familiar phone-based interface in addition to the built-in Apple Maps navigation planned for Ford’s UEV Platform.
