OpenAI’s doughnut speaker could be a screenless, battery-powered AI device small enough to carry around a home, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The August 6 report, based on unnamed people familiar with confidential work, says OpenAI is considering a price above $300. Gurman separately described the expected range as $300 to $400.

Bloomberg’s sources described the device as ring- or doughnut-shaped and roughly hockey-puck sized, with no display. It is reportedly meant to be carried with one hand, then used either while held or placed on a nightstand or kitchen counter.

The reported device is a portable voice interface for OpenAI’s AI models, with a speaker and microphones for conversation rather than a screen for apps. Bloomberg says OpenAI expects people to use it throughout the day, in a model similar to ChatGPT’s smartphone voice mode but intended to support more humanlike interaction.
Gurman reported that OpenAI wants the product to learn about a user over time and adjust its conversations accordingly. That is an intended behavior, not proof that the hardware can reliably do it. A language model can generate responses from a prompt and its supplied context; how LLMs generate answers is a separate question from what personal data a device may collect or retain.
What features are reportedly planned?
According to Bloomberg and Gurman’s August 6 posts, the proposed hardware would include:
- speaker grilles and microphones for voice commands and conversation;
- lights intended to show when it is listening;
- a camera system and other sensors to take in visual information from the surrounding environment; and
- components that move on their own, meant to signal response and interaction.
The lights and moving elements are reportedly part of OpenAI’s effort to give the object a more responsive presence. They do not make it autonomous: the reports describe a device designed to be moved by its user around the home.
The new details add a physical description and tentative price to earlier Bloomberg reporting from July. That earlier report said OpenAI was planning a mobile, screen-free speaker as an at-home AI companion that could control smart-home appliances, play media, answer questions, respond to messages and access ChatGPT capabilities.
For now, the most concrete point is also the narrowest one: Bloomberg’s unnamed sources say OpenAI is developing a portable, sensor-equipped, display-free speaker, with a likely price above $300. Whether it ships with that shape, that feature list or that price remains unconfirmed.
