Research Gold AI medical research claims are under scrutiny after 404 Media reported that the company marketed manuscript and review services as “100% human-written, never AI” while its reporter encountered communications that appeared to be AI-generated and staff profiles that did not hold up to basic checking.
The distinction is not academic. Research Gold advertised work on peer-review-ready manuscripts, systematic reviews and meta-analyses. It also said its service used PRISMA 2020 reporting guidance and the Cochrane Handbook, and was led by PhD methodologists with publication records.
Systematic reviews gather and assess existing research on a defined question; a meta-analysis can combine results from multiple studies. Research Gold’s advertised workflow included building a protocol, searching databases, screening papers, extracting data, assessing risk of bias, conducting a synthesis and preparing a manuscript. Those are tasks for which the company presented methodological expertise as part of the offering.
What did 404 Media find about Research Gold?
According to 404 Media, eight people named on Research Gold’s team page, including purported lead methodologist Elena Vasquez and review specialist Mei-Lin Chen, had no matching publication record or online presence consistent with the biographies on the site. The outlet described the associated headshots as apparently AI-generated.
A separate portion of the site named people who appeared to be real freelance methodologists or academics, using LinkedIn images and biographies. Jenny Berrio, an evidence-synthesis scientist listed by the company, told 404 Media that she did not work for Research Gold, had not authorized the listing and had no relationship with the business. She said the company had used her name, photograph and bio without permission.
404 Media reported that Research Gold removed the page naming Berrio and other real people after its reporter contacted Berrio. The outlet also said the company listed academic papers it claimed to have worked on, but that the lead authors it contacted did not reply.
In a phone call described by 404 Media, an assistant calling itself Sarah insisted it was a real person while redirecting repeated requests to speak with a human toward a sales quote. The reporter also said email and chat responses from a purported PhD methodologist appeared AI-generated.
For a test request about the effects of blog-style digital content on children aged 0 to 5, Research Gold quoted $1,900. The company said that price covered a registration-ready protocol, database searches, dual screening of titles, abstracts and full text, data extraction, risk-of-bias appraisal, narrative synthesis and a journal-formatted write-up. The report did not independently establish that those steps would be performed or identify who operates the company.
Why does human oversight matter in medical writing?
Medical-writing specialists told Clinical Trials Arena that language models can accelerate drafts but that off-the-shelf systems require human oversight and can struggle with clinical reasoning and logic. That broader limitation does not prove what Research Gold delivered to customers. It does explain why a vendor’s claims about the people conducting review work are material.
404 Media said it sought comment from Research Gold and received a reply it considered AI-generated, though the available text of that response was incomplete. The reported evidence establishes a conflict between the company’s human-only marketing and the outlet’s observations, plus Berrio’s denial of affiliation. It does not show that every paid deliverable, or every part of the business, was produced by AI.
