Pokémon Champions mobile tournaments now exist at some store-level events, but players pursuing regional championships, international events or Worlds still need Nintendo Switch hardware. The distinction matters because Champions is available on iOS, Android, Switch and Switch 2, and mobile players can battle people using Nintendo’s consoles.
According to The Verge’s reporting on the Video Game Championships, or VGC, rules updated September 1, mobile devices are permitted at certain Play! Pokémon Store events. Regional-level tournaments and every tier above them require a Switch instead. Phones are not barred from official play across the board. They are barred from the part of the circuit where the larger titles are decided.
Pokémon Champions is the battle-focused game that The Pokémon Company moved into its organized video-game competition in 2026. Its official site says it uses familiar series mechanics including types, Abilities and moves, while supporting cross-platform battles between mobile devices, Switch and Switch 2.
Can you use a phone at Pokémon Champions tournaments?
Yes, but only at eligible Play! Pokémon Store events under the current rules reported by The Verge. For Regional Championships, Special Championships, International Championships and the World Championships, competitors need Switch hardware.
The official VGC handbook, last revised September 1, says competitors must bring the equipment needed to play and that requirements may differ by tournament level and location. It also tells players to follow instructions from each tournament organizer. The handbook is reviewed quarterly, so a rule that is true for one event should not be treated as immortal tablet text.
The Pokémon Company had already made Champions the standard VGC platform for competitive matches when the Switch version launched April 8. It identified the Indianapolis Regional Championships, held May 29 through 31, as the first live official Championship Series event to use Champions exclusively. The company also said the game would remain the platform for Premier Events, including the 2026 World Championships.
Why do major Pokémon Champions events require a Switch?
Pokémon Champions producer Masaaki Hoshino offered two reasons in a roundtable interview before the September rule revision, according to The Verge. Through an interpreter, he pointed to the visual quality available on Switch 2 and said accommodating competitors’ many different phone models could complicate live events.
Those comments are an explanation from a producer, not a detailed published technical policy. The cited reporting did not identify a further technical explanation for the tiered device rule.
There is already one hardware-related exception in the rulebook for streamed matches: team IDs can be used for recordkeeping or checks, and may be used on equipment supplied by a tournament organizer for broadcasts. That does not change the basic requirement for competitors at regional events and above, but it shows organizers can control the hardware in specific circumstances.
For players, the practical answer is blunt: a phone is enough for cross-platform battles and some official store events. A Switch remains required for the high-level VGC path. Check the current VGC tournament handbook and the organizer’s event instructions before registering.
