Router vs. modem: which box connects your home to the internet?

A modem connects your home to the internet provider. A router shares that connection with your devices over Wi-Fi and Ethernet.

A modem connects your home to your internet service provider. A router takes that connection and creates the network used by phones, laptops, TVs, and wired devices. Most homes need both functions, although they can live in one physical box.

The useful path is: provider service line → modem → router → devices. Follow it when setting up equipment or figuring out where a connection problem begins.

Router vs. modem: different jobs

  • Modem: The provider-facing device. It connects to the ISP network and translates the incoming service signal into an internet connection your home can use.
  • Router: The home-facing device. It creates a local area network, then directs the available connection to multiple devices through Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Its modem-facing connection is commonly called the WAN port.

Routers also manage traffic among connected devices. Depending on the model, they may offer controls such as a firewall, guest-network access, traffic-priority settings, device monitoring, or parental controls. Those are possible features, not a guaranteed checklist.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Connect to the ISP: Modem yes; router no.
  • Create a home network: Modem no; router yes.
  • Provide Wi-Fi: A standalone modem no; a router yes.
  • Connect several wired devices: A standalone modem generally provides one wired connection; a router has Ethernet ports for devices as well as its modem connection.

Do you need one box or two?

For one computer connected directly by Ethernet, modem functionality can be enough. Wi-Fi or several connected devices require router functionality too.

That does not require two boxes. A modem-router combo, often called a gateway when supplied by an ISP, combines both jobs. If one provider-supplied device connects to the service line and broadcasts your Wi-Fi network, it is acting as a gateway.

Separate modem and router

Separate hardware lets you restart, replace, or upgrade each piece independently. NETGEAR presents that as an advantage when the provider-facing connection changes or the Wi-Fi side needs attention. The trade-off is more equipment, cables, and setup.

Gateway or combo unit

A gateway puts both functions in one device, with one power supply and one setup process. It can be the less fussy option. The trade-off is that replacing the unit affects both the modem and router functions.

Before adding a separate router to provider equipment, establish whether the provider device is already routing. NETGEAR warns that connecting a new router to an active gateway can leave devices on separate networks unless the setup accounts for the gateway's existing router function.

Read the cables, not the plastic

Start with the connection path. The device attached to the incoming service line is doing the modem job. A separate router is normally connected to it by Ethernet, has a WAN port and ports for wired local devices, and broadcasts the Wi-Fi network.

One box can obscure those clues. Check its label, provider app, or documentation for terms such as “gateway,” “modem-router,” or “cable gateway.” The practical test is whether it both connects to the provider service and creates a Wi-Fi network for several devices.

Where to start when the connection fails

  1. Compare wired and Wi-Fi behavior. If a device wired to the router works while Wi-Fi devices do not, start with the router's wireless connection and settings.
  2. Check the path upstream. If no devices can get online, check power, the incoming service line, and the Ethernet link between the modem and router.
  3. Isolate cautiously. A device connected directly to the modem can help distinguish a router problem from an issue involving the modem or provider connection. A failed direct connection does not identify the exact fault by itself.

The short version: the modem gets internet to the home; the router gets it around the home.

Do I need a separate router if my ISP gave me a gateway?

Usually no. A gateway combines modem and router functions, so it can connect to the ISP and provide a home network and Wi-Fi. A separate router may allow independent changes to the home-network side, but its setup must account for the gateway's existing router function.

Does a better router increase my internet-plan speed?

No. A router cannot add bandwidth beyond what the internet service connection delivers. It can affect how that available connection is shared among devices.

How can I tell whether the modem or router is the problem?
